PREPARATION
SURFACE
PREPARATION
All
existing surfaces that are to receive tile must be
clean, sound, solid, and free of weak or loose areas,
dust, dirt, oil, or any contaminant that may act
as a bond breaker. The plane of wall surfaces must
be plumb and true. Floor surfaces must have minimal
variation in the plane or the slope. Should pre-leveling
on an interior floor be required, use HENRY 547 Universal
Underlayment. Tiling with HENRY 316 MarbleFlex Fast-Setting
Thinset Mortar may proceed in 16 hours. Expansion
joints must be provided over existing moving joints
and where substrate materials change composition
or direction.
PRIMING:
Standard absorbent substrates such as concrete require no priming
prior to installing the tile. For applications over nonabsorbent
substrates such as metal, glass, solidly bonded non-porous
coatings, and existing tiles, prime with HENRY Floor Primer
and allow to dry thoroughly (min. 3 hours, max. 24 hours) prior
to beginning the installation.
MIXING:
The standard mixing ratio is 1.5 qt. of water per 12.5 lb. box.
Put clean water in the mixing container first, then add the
HENRY 316 MarbleFlex Fast-Setting Thinset Mortar powder. For
mixing smaller amounts, use a mixing ratio of 2 3/4 parts powder
to one part water by volume. For best results, mix with the
mixing paddle and 1/2” heavy-duty drill. To mix by
hand, use a margin trowel and mix vigorously for 2-3 minutes. Just
prior to application on the substrate, the mixture should be stirred
again to ensure a creamy, smooth and lump free consistency. NO
SLAKE TIME IS REQUIRED!
NOTE: The pot life of HENRY 316 MarbleFlex Fast-Setting Thinset
Mortar is 30 minutes at 70°F. If surface skinning occurs within
this time, stir material again before using. DO NOT ADD MORE WATER!
INSTALLATION
After
mixing, apply a thin scratch coat of the mortar to
the substrate with the flat side of a trowel to obtain
a solid mechanical bond. Apply to an area no greater
than that which can be covered with tile while the
mortar remains plastic (approx. minutes 10 working
time, depending on the substrate and job site conditions).
Comb the mortar with a notched trowel to sufficient
depth to ensure that the tiles are covered uniformly
over their entire surface. The type and size of the
tiles will dictate the size of the notched trowel
to be used. The position of the tiles may be corrected
for approximately 10 minutes after their installation.
Rough or uneven substrates may first be treated with
a full scratch coat of HENRY 316 MarbleFlex. Installation
of tiles may begin after the scratch coat has hardened.
BACK-BUTTERING:
When setting tiles, it may be necessary to trowel a layer of mortar
on the back of each tile prior to placing on the combed mortar
bed in order to achieve the required mortar-to-tile contact
specified. Press tile firmly into the freshly combed mortar
to ensure maximum mortar contact with tile. Tile must not be
applied to skinned-over mortar.
GROUTING:
Tiles may be grouted after 2 hours. HENRY recommends the use of
HENRY MarbleFlex Grout to prevent staining of marble and natural
stone.
